Lake Eyasi is a seasonal, shallow alkaline (“soda”) lake located in the Karatu District, Arusha Region, in northern Tanzania.
It lies in the Eyasi‐Wembere branch of the Great Rift Valley, just south of the Serengeti Plateau, immediately southwest of Ngorongoro Crater.
The lake has dramatic seasonal fluctuations: during the dry season it may dry out substantially, leaving alkaline flats, whereas in wetter periods it fills up, attracting waterbirds and wildlife.
Lake Eyasi is also known for its indigenous communities, especially the Hadza (Hadzabe) hunter‐gatherers and the Datoga pastoralists, who live in its vicinity maintaining traditional lifestyles. Visiting them is a major draw.
